Get to know our Chef: Darryl Howie
Darryl's love of cooking began in high school where he specialized in baking for three years. During the summer months he cooked at the YMCA camps. He decided that cooking was his career choice and he began his journey.
He was accepted into the apprentice program at the Talisman Mountain Resort in Kimberley, ON and later at Janet Lynn's Bistro under Janet Lynn where he specialized as a Saucier. He studied at George Brown College in Toronto where he received his red seal in May 1990. Over the span of the two decades Darryl has worked as Head/Executive Chef/Chef at Charlie's Restaurant, Krebs/Ali Baba, Pinestone Resort in Haliburton, Del Dentes/Charcoal. He also worked in a union operated environment at Mohawk-Woodbine Racetrack as a Sous Chef. He was the executive Chef at the Walper Hotel.
He also was an owner/Chef at the Rum Runner Pub. Darryl teaches part time at Liasson College in Kitchener as well as the owner/operator of this Cafe.
At every place he has worked, he has always had at least one or two apprentices and work placement students from the local high schools and colleges. Training the future generation of Chefs and cooks has always been very high on his list. Darryl's motto is "I love to teach the art of cooking to anyone who wants to learn."
